Ben Gray, head of Dyson Professional Middle East, Africa & Turkey, speaks to Hotelier about his and the company’s views on the forthcoming conference being held June 19 2019 at Grosvenor House, Dubai.

Why is it important that you support the Hotelier Middle East: Executive Housekeeper Forum?

What do you think are the main challenges facing housekeeping professionals in 2018?
One of the biggest challenges facing housekeeping professionals in the region in general, and Dubai specifically, is the ever-increasing standards of properties. This in turn heightens guest expectation, which can put a severe strain on the housekeeping department when it comes to service quality. Another factor is the often lengthy approval process for acquiring new in-room technology. While the process may vary with individual hotel operators, a majority go through trial steps by the housekeeping department, following which the application goes to the general manager, which, if approved then moves to the procurement department before finally being signed off by the managing director or group director. Unsurprisingly, the entire process can take up to several months from initial pitch to sign-off. There is then the thorny issue of budgets. With an increasing strain on the bottom-line, budgets can be severely restricted, which makes investment in new in-room technology a bigger challenge than ever before.

What most excites you about the UAE hospitality industry in 2018?
The most exciting aspect of the hospitality industry in the region is that it’s witnessing exponential growth. While earlier this would have largely been centred in larger cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in 2018 we saw a spurt of new development in other emirates, too. This bodes well for the industry. In general, the luxury market is continuing to register high demand, which is also a contributing factor to the overall stability of the industry in general. Finally, what excites us most is the seemingly never-ending stream of unique new hotel and restaurant concepts across the region. At Dyson, unceasing innovation is at the core of our company and it’s heartening to see such high levels of creativity in the hospitality industry in the region.

What main topics are you expecting at the Hotelier Middle East 2019 Executive Housekeeper Forum?
We are hoping to see where the regional industry is heading in terms of in-room technology. Being a technology company, Dyson is always keen to learn about the trends as our products provide leading-edge solutions in this area. It would also be interesting to gain further insight into what the hotel industry as a whole is doing to improve customer experience and the challenges their housekeeping staff are facing.  Furthermore, as players in the hospitality industry, we are also keen to find out more about upcoming projects in the region.

What are the latest product launches from your company?
We have recently launched the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, Dyson Pure Cool purifying fan and Dyson Airwrap styler. Powered by the Dyson digital motor V9, the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer uses our Air Multiplier™ technology, which amplifies air three times, producing 41 litres of air per second. This creates a focused jet of air for precise, simultaneous drying and styling, unlike any hairdryer on the market. The Dyson Pure Cool air purifier, meanwhile, senses and displays real-time air quality. It also captures allergens, pollutants and gases and has a night-time mode, which uses a quiet setting and a dim display, for enhanced comfort. Finally, our Dyson Airwrap uses innovative technology to style hair without extreme heat. Powered by our advanced Dyson digital motor V9 that spins at up to 11,000rpm, the Dyson Airwrap uses air to curl or style hair without causing damage. The Dyson Airwrap’s thermistor measures airflow temperature up to 40 times a second, which enables the machine’s microprocessor to constantly monitor the heat and keep it under 150-degree Celsius.

What other news can we expect from your company?
We are launching a brand new smart light: Dyson LightCycle and a new Dyson Pure Cool Me air purifier. The Dyson LightcycleTM task light is designed to improve visual acuity and is the result of more than two years of development, with more than 892 prototypes made and more than 90 engineers involved. The Dyson LightcycleTM task light provides a uniform pool of high-quality, powerful light with more than 1,000 Lux brightness, combined with glare protection and low optical flicker (<1%). The Pure Cool Me TM personal purifying fan, meanwhile, harnesses Dyson’s expertise in fluid dynamics, air filtration, light sensing, and acoustic performance, and is engineered to support wellbeing, delivering cleaner air and a more comfortable cooling experience. For a personal purifying fan, a focused stream of air is crucial. Dyson Core FlowTM technology revolutionises the way we deliver cleaner air to our customers’ personal space.
