Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk earns gold tier rating for sustainability efforts

The Gold Tier rating from the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp showcases the hotel’s dedication to environmental stewardship and social responsibility

Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk has achieved Gold Tier rating from the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp.

Established by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), this initiative recognises hotels that excel in meeting the 19 sustainability requirements, encompassing areas like food and water management, energy conservation, employee training and corporate social responsibility.

At Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk, various initiatives have been undertaken to minimise environmental impact and promote social responsibility, spearheaded by executive hotel chef Russell Impiazzi and general manager Luciano Fontana, and supported by the sustainability committee.

Fontana said: “This stamp is not merely an accolade; it is a symbol of our collective dedication to fostering a greener and more sustainable future for Dubai’s tourism sector. The journey towards the Gold Tier has been a remarkable one for Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk.

“Our commitment to sustainability is deeply ingrained in our culture, aligning with the rigorous Sustainability Requirements set by DET. All colleagues and leaders at The Obelisk are committed to our sustainability goals, and without our talents, the following milestones in our sustainability journey would not have been achieved”.

Through strategic partnerships with local entities like ReLoop and ChefsEye, the hotel has effectively managed food waste, diverting it from landfills to compost, totalling over 365,000 kilograms since 2022.

Collaborations with the UAE Food Bank have further enabled the conversion of food surplus into meaningful donations, amounting to over 16,000 meals for the local community. Additionally, sustainability is emphasised in sourcing food and beverage items, with one-third being sustainably procured from local, regional, fair trade, and organic suppliers by the end of 2023.

Energy-efficient fixtures and monitoring systems have led to a 36.97 percent reduction in energy consumption throughout the hotel.
