Hotelier Middle East Power 50 2019: Number 18
Here's who made it to the list
In the past 12 months, Shaza Hotels has doubled the number of its operating portfolio in the region with the introduction of three new hotels and Simon Coombs, president and CEO of the group is ranked 18 on the Power 50 2019 list.
February saw the opening of Shaza Riyadh, the third Shaza hotel in the Kingdom. The 205-key property was inspired by an Andalusian riad and is located next to the capital city’s Al Rajhi Grand Mosque.
It followed the launch of the 251-room Shaza Makkah last year and US$2.7m refurbishment of Shaza Al Madina.
Shaza’s expansion continued as it was appointed to take over operations of the Sharjah Collection retreats from Mantis. It now manages three properties: Kingfisher Lodge in Kalba, Al Badayer Oasis in Al Badayer, and Al Faya Lodge in Mleiha.
Having started with just one property when he took over in 2009, Coombs told Hotelier Middle East that he is now aiming to build a portfolio of “30 to 40 carefully selected properties” that are “each in the top three of their competitive set”.
