The Hotelier Middle East Awards 2024 took place in Dubai in September.
More than 500 industry leaders and rising stars were in attendance at The Ritz-Carlton DIFC, where the winners and highly commended people and teams were revealed in 35 categories.
This year marked the 20th anniversary of the event, which celebrated front-of house staff, as well those behind the scenes, and the managers who oversee operations.
The categories covered everything from HR, finance, housekeepers, sustainability champions and more. Read on to find out why they were chosen as winners by our panel of judges.
Concierge & Guest Services Person of the Year
Aliae Edebbab, Waldorf Astoria, DIFC
With nearly four years of experience, Aliae Edebbab has elevated guest satisfaction and loyalty at the hotel through her leadership and commitment to excellence. She has been instrumental in driving the hotel to the second-highest ranking on TripAdvisor. What truly impressed the judges was her unwavering focus on personalised service and a guest-centric approach that has significantly boosted guest satisfaction and loyalty. One of Edebbab’s notable contributions has been the implementation of an in-house CRM system that captures detailed guest preferences and interactions.
Spa Person of the Year
Sri Widyawati, Sofitel Dubai The Palm
Sri Widyawati’s exceptional leadership and innovative approach at Sofitel Dubai The Palm’s spa have set her apart as a standout in the industry. What stood out to the panel was not only her journey and growth from spa supervisor to assistant spa manager, but also her dedication and impact on the team. She has successfully transformed the spa into a hub of wellness by introducing unique treatments like Psammotherapy and Gua Sha, keeping the spa ahead of the curve.
Fitness & Recreation Person of the Year
Bulent Cetindere, Rixos Premium Dubai
Over the years, Bulent Cetindere’s leadership and commitment has significantly elevated the hotel’s fitness department’s performance to new heights. His leadership has driven the fitness team to exceed monthly sales targets by 20 percent, contributing to a 15 percent increase in annual revenue. Cetindere’s innovative approach has led to the development of five new fitness programs, boosting enrollment.
Hotel Engineer of the Year
Naved Shaikh, Taj Dubai
Naved Shaikh, the director of engineering at Taj Dubai, has made a strong impact with his 15 years of expertise in engineering and sustainability. Since joining the property, Shaikh has led his team of 21 associates to achieve significant operational efficiencies and environmental milestones. Under Shaikh’s leadership, Taj Dubai has reduced energy consumption by 15.9 percent, greenhouse gas emissions by 15.3 percent, and potable water usage significantly between 2021 and 2022.
Housekeeper of the Year
Rajesh Chemmala Kodoor, voco Dubai The Palm
As the driving force behind housekeeping at voco Dubai The Palm, Rajesh Chemmala Kodoor has set a new benchmark for excellence in the hospitality industry. Throughout 2023 and 2024, his dedication has led to outstanding cleanliness scores. Kodoor’s leadership goes beyond maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
Housekeeping Manager of the Year
Mary Mbui, Holiday Inn & Suites Dubai Science Park
Since the hotel’s opening in December 2022, Mary Mbui has made a mark with her work. In her first head of department role, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership, achieving a 97 percent cleanliness score in 2023, which has been maintained in 2024. Her innovative approach has been instrumental in establishing high standards of operational excellence and team development. Mbui has been a pioneer in sustainability, implementing eco-friendly cleaning products, a linen reuse program that reduced laundry costs by 40 percent, and an in-house water bottling plant, saving up to 1,500 plastic bottles daily and cutting operational costs by 30 percent.
Human Resources Person of the Year
Bander Bakker, Shangri-La Jeddah
Since joining Shangri-La Jeddah in December 2021, Bander Bakker has revolutionised the hotel’s HR landscape with his visionary leadership and commitment to excellence. Rapidly promoted to assistant director of human resources by July 2022, Bakker has been instrumental in implementing strategic initiatives that have elevated colleague engagement and operational efficiency. Bakker’s dedication to diversity is evident in his achievement of a 45 percent Saudisation rate, including a 26 percent representation of female employees.
Talent Acquisition Person of the Year
Mary-Susan McLoughlin, Jumeirah Mina Al Salam
Mary-Susan McLoughlin, recruitment assistant manager at Jumeirah Mina Al Salam, has transformed the talent acquisition landscape for Jumeirah Hotels through her strategic vision and innovative approach. Over the past year, she has led ambitious recruitment drives, both in Dubai and internationally, successfully bringing nearly 1,000 new employees on board.

Anjeanette Manuel, Rixos Hotels GCC & ALL Inclusive Collection
Anjeanette Manuel, country PR manager for Rixos Hotels GCC & ALL Inclusive Collection, has redefined what it means to be a PR leader in the hospitality industry. In just one year, she achieved an impressive 5,220 media mentions, reaching a staggering audience of 6.1 billion with a PR value of US$22.8 million. Her strategic approach not only amplified the brand’s visibility on a global scale but also garnered 25 prestigiou awards, positioning Rixos as a leader in luxury hospitality.
IT Person of the Year
Abraham Bosco, Atlantis Dubai
Abraham Bosco, assistant director of IT at Atlantis Dubai, has distinguished himself as a transformative leader in the hospitality industry through his innovative approach to technology and data management. Since joining in March 2023, Bosco has spearheaded numerous initiatives that have elevated the guest experience and optimised operational efficiency.
Finance Person of the Year
Taalaibek Zhunusaliev, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal
Since the opening of The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, Taalaibek Zhunusaliev has demonstrated exceptional financial leadership and strategic vision, significantly contributing to the hotel’s remarkable success. Under his guidance, the hotel has achieved the highest Gross Operating Profit (GOP) margin in the region, as well as impressive profitability in rooms, owner returns, and quarterly results.
Procurement Person of the Year
Omar Naveed, Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas
Since joining in 2019, Omar Naveed has played a crucial role in the resort’s pre-opening phase. Overseeing procurement for a sprawling property that includes a luxury spa, marina, water park, and multiple restaurants, Naveed’s expertise has been pivotal in maintaining high standards across all facilities. Naveed also launched the Local Produce program, supporting local farms and reducing CO2 emissions, and introduced a sustainable seafood sourcing program, aligning with Hilton’s global sustainability goals.
Revenue Management Person of the Year
Anastasija Ovtchinnikova, Atlantis Dubai
Since joining Atlantis Dubai in August 2020, Anastasija Ovtchinnikova has been a driving force behind the resort’s commercial success. Her expertise has been instrumental in the pre-opening strategy for Atlantis The Royal. Leading a team of 18, Ovtchinnikova has implemented innovative strategies to optimise revenues across Atlantis Dubai’s 70-plus F&B outlets. She also introduced dynamic pricing models in the world’s largest waterpark, driving growth.
Safety & Security Person of the Year
Hussain Al Blooshi, Yas Plaza Hotels
Since joining Aldar Hospitality as Area Director of Security in June 2023, Hussain Alblooshi has been instrumental in elevating safety and security standards across Yas hotels. His leadership has been pivotal in implementing advanced security technologies and enhancing monitoring capabilities throughout the properties. By spearheading comprehensive emergency preparedness programs, Hussain has ensured that staff are well-equipped to handle any unforeseen events with confidence and efficiency. His collaborative approach extends to building strong partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, facilitating swift and effective responses to potential threats.

Since joining Marriott in 2018, Alma Alfon Gandhi has demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic vision, consistently surpassing revenue targets and driving significant growth across all properties under her purview. In 2023, Gandhi led the leisure sales team to achieve a record-breaking 106,000 wholesale room nights at JW Marriott Marquis that has reflected her sales acumen and ability to generate business volume.
Chief Steward of the Year
Anisul Islam, voco Dubai
With 16 years of experience in the industry, Anisul Islam has been instrumental in elevating operational standards and efficiency. His leadership was pivotal in securing a Grade A rating from Dubai Municipality for the first time in seven years. Islam’s dedication to cost-saving measures and process improvements led to a 10 percent reduction in breakages and a streamlined OS&E inventory, optimising procurement and significantly lowering expenses.
Banquet Manager of the Year
Saida El Massmoudi, Madinat Jumeirah
Since taking on her role, Saida El Massmoudi has transformed the banquet operations of Madinat Jumeirah, ensuring each event is a flawless experience that exceeds client expectations. El Massmoudi’s commitment to excellence extends to her team, whom she mentors through personalised training programs and development plans. Her focus on skill enhancement has resulted in a motivated and high-performing team. El Massmoudi’s dedication to sustainability, including eliminating plastic water bottles at events, showcases her holistic approach to hospitality.
F&B Manager of the Year
Marvin Coelho, The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai
Since joining The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai, Marvin Coelho has played a pivotal role in elevating the hotel’s F&B offerings. His leadership was instrumental in launching acclaimed venues like Tamoka and Caña, contributing to the hotel achieving its first Forbes Five-Star rating. Coelho’s commitment to creating memorable guest experiences is reflected in the successful execution of unique conceptw. These initiatives not only captivated guests but also boosted revenues, with sales surpassing 2022 figures by 25 percent.

James Hawkes, Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai
Initially leading the Beach Club, James Hawkes now oversees kitchen operations for Café Nikki, Soul Lounge, Pool & Beach, and Private Dining. In the past year, Hawkes has maintained an impressive 25 percent average food cost by implementing effective inventory management and waste reduction practices. Hawkes also pioneered a 440-square-foot hydroponic farm, producing 90 percent of the hotel’s lettuce and herbs while consuming 90 percent less water than traditional methods.
Culinary Director of the Year
Bernhard Cekon, Mondrian Doha
Bernhard Cekon, culinary director at Mondrian Doha, is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of global experience across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and China. Cekon’s commitment to sustainability led to the implementation of a food waste reduction program that reduced the hotel’s carbon footprint by 41.1 tons. He further enhanced Mondrian Doha with the successful launch of “Bottega di Carna,” a seasonal pop-up that attracted significant footfall.

Armand Thieblemont, Six Senses Zighy Bay
Six Senses Zighy Bay, under the leadership of Armand Thieblemont, made significant strides in sustainability through its Earth Lab initiatives. Focusing on waste management, the resort introduced various activities such as sustainability tours, soap-making, candle-making, and glass upcycling, engaging hundreds of guests in meaningful ways. Thieblemont’s vision extended to the resort’s Organic Dibba Farm, which produced over 10,000 organic eggs, nearly 4,000 kg of fresh fruits and vegetables, and over 1,200 litres of goat milk used for homemade cheese.

Bruno Hivon Holiday Inn & Staybridge Suites Dubai Business Bay
Bruno Hivon, cluster general manager of Holiday Inn & Staybridge Suites Dubai Business Bay continues to exemplify his commitment to sustainability and inclusivity. In December 2023, Hivon launched an on-site water bottling plant during the hotel’s pre-opening phase, reducing single-use plastic bottles. The hotel also introduced a cardboard recycling cage and adopted eco-friendly bathroom amenities, biodegradable packaging, and non-toxic cleaning chemicals. Championing inclusivity, Hivon has welcomed People of Determination into the team, including Charlene, a Barista, and Raza, an F&B attendant, both with hearing impairments.

Sageer Ahmed, Holiday Inn Thuraya City Kuwait
Having joined the team in 2021 as a window cleaner, Sageer Ahmed has demonstrated remarkable growth and versatility, becoming a pivotal member of the housekeeping team. His journey from a dedicated window cleaner to a multi-skilled team member highlights his unwavering commitment to excellence and professional development. Recognised last year as the “Best Worker – Heart of the House” at the Hotel Town Hall, Ahmed’s contributions have resonated with colleagues, the general manager, and hotel owners alike.

Rawad Faez, a young Omani hotelier, began his hospitality career at Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah in August 2019, entering the industry with no prior experience. Over the past five years, he has made remarkable progress, demonstrating unwavering dedication and a passion for growth. Starting as a bellboy, Faez quickly distinguished himself with his excellent customer service skills and proactive attitude.

Since its debut in February, 2024, The Lana, the first Dorchester Collection hotel in the Middle East, has set a new standard in Dubai’s ultra-luxury hospitality scene. The team’s exceptional efforts have not only established the hotel as a unique destination but have also created a vibrant and cohesive company culture. The recruitment process alone was monumental, with over 62,000 applications, 8,000 interviews, and a diverse team of 463 members representing 65 countries.

Driving Minor Hotels to a stellar year in 2024, Amir Golbarg has played a crucial role in expanding the group’s presence with significant property launches. This year alone, he successfully opened the Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort and the Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat, strengthening Minor’s footprint in the UAE. Golbarg’s strategic initiatives extend beyond the UAE, with the group poised to debut its first Anantara property in Jaipur, India, later this year, marking a milestone in the brand’s global expansion.
