Udaya Kumara, cluster purchasing manager at Grand Millennium Hotel Dubai talks about the his role, the challenges he faces and more
How long have you been in this role?
My professional journey began in 2017 as an assistant cluster purchasing manager in Novotel Al Bustan AUH and in 2018 I was promoted as the cluster purchasing manager. In 2019, I moved to Grand Millennium Hotel Dubai & Grand Millennium Business Bay as their cluster purchasing manager. Being a part of these two hotels has given me the opportunity to grow my potential by taking up great challenges that have helped me gain more experience in the industry.
What specific products are you are on the lookout for?
As the cluster purchasing manager, my major focus is to identify the best products for food, beverage, and general items, along with guest amenities, engineering equipment, printing materials, and AMC contracting as well.
What challenges do you face at work?
The critical issue that I generally face is the delivery timing of the items and their availability. The common challenge we all face in the hospitality industry is that delivering a product will cost higher than usual when we have an urgent requirement. The issue becomes intense if the items are to be imported with unexpected effectiveness.
Tell us about one of your most successful deals?
Some of my successful deals have been for chemicals, fruits & vegetable contracts that have resulted in better savings.
What does a supplier have to do to impress you?
It’s simple, they should approach me with an excellent proposal, which is not only cost-effective and enables savings but does not compromise on the quality as well. At the end of the day it is my job to bring in the best quality provision to my property.
