Riyadh will host the World Expo in 2030. The event, themed The Era of Change, pledges global collaboration on sustainability and inclusivity in line with UN goals and Saudi Vision 2030.
Saudi Arabia dominated the votes during a general assembly session in Paris convened by the organising committee for the global event.
Overcoming competitors Rome and Busan, Riyadh garnered 119 votes from the Bureau International des Expositions’ 160 member states. This success concludes a two-year campaign, supported by international figures such as athletes, pop stars, and actors.
This milestone marks Saudi Arabia’s first time hosting an Expo and the second for the Middle East and North Africa region, following Dubai’s Expo 2020.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, extended congratulations, emphasizing the shared joy and success for the Gulf region. Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan expressed gratitude to 130 nations supporting the bid, highlighting Riyadh Expo 2030’s vision of a collaborative global effort for an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable event.
Prince Faisal outlined the critical timing of Expo 2030, aligning with the UN’s sustainable development goals and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. Cristiano Ronaldo, in a video message, endorsed Riyadh and its readiness to welcome visitors, urging support for the city. Princess Haifa bint Abdulaziz Al Mogrin pledged proactive measures to advance global development goals, addressing health, education, climate, and environmental challenges.
Expressing excitement about hosting the Expo, Princess Haifa emphasised Riyadh’s central role in a dynamic nation undergoing significant transformation led by its youth. The bid’s theme, The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow,” encapsulates the commitment to collaboration, she said. Officials project Riyadh’s capability to welcome 120 million visitors for Expo 2030.
Osaka, Japan, is set to host the next Expo, following the success of the Dubai Expo.
