Sultan B. Al Otaibi has taken the three-year-old Riyadh-based Makarim Hospitality Group, the operating arm of Saudi Arabia Hotels and Resorts Co, and developed it into a key player in Saudi Arabia’s hospitality scene.
While the parent company has been owning and operating hotels in Saudi Arabia for a quarter of a century, Sultan Al Otaibi has been tasked with growing the Makarim Hospitality Group brand portfolio across Saudi Arabia.
This year has seen positive growth in terms of raw figures; revenue of group properties has increased 10.93 % compared to the same period in 2012. Gross operating profit is up 2.90 %, while average room rate has risen an impressive 20.85 %.
Al Otaibi also oversaw the setup of the group’s call centre and group loyalty programme.
There are currently seven hotels in the portfolio with two confirmed in the pipeline — Makarim Mina hotel and Makarim Alshorofat, both in Saudi Arabia, where the company specialises.
Al Otaibi believes filling these hotels will be helped by various Makkah projects and the Tawaf expansion, which will bring more pilgrims to the holy city as well as increased corporate business in Riyadh — all opportunities for the increased occupancy and higher RevPAR he intends to drive.
