Since founding Flamingo Hotel Management Company 12 years ago, with just three people on the team, Amine E. Mourkazel has grown the company to more than 6000 employees and 70 hotels under the Golden Tulip Hotels, Suites & Resorts brands in the MENA region, for which he has also been president since November 2012.
Moukarzel’s target is to open one hotel a month, and over the past 12 months, on average he has achieved this. Eight hotels have been signed in the last year and 15 hotels are confirmed in the pipeline for the next three years; including signed, franchised and managed hotels in places such as Doha, Cairo, Beirut, Algeria, and Morocco through to debuts in Kyrgyzstan and Tbilisi, Georgia.
By the end of 2014, Moukarzel expects to open another 12 hotels.
His goal is to reach 100 hotels within the next three to four years and especially to grow the luxury Royal Tulip brand portfolio, which currently stands at five following the recent opening of Royal Tulip Alexandria, to 20 by 2020.
Moukarzel remains hands-on with operational initiatives, this year introducing a dietician to the hotels, creating a new role of breakfast duty manager and ensuring the successful continued operation of KSA hotels despite more stringent restrictions impacting staff allocation.
Going forward, he is looking to introduce the Campanile budget hotel brand to the Middle East and incorporate the company’s new distribution systems and migration from Pegasus to Micros, which Moukarzel is confident will enhance key drivers to the hotels.
Aside from his company management roles, Moukarzel also finds time to lecture in hospitality quality management around Europe and the Middle East, contributing to the development of many hoteliers who have gone on to senior roles in the region, and was responsible for forming the management programme at the University of Saint Esprit Kaslik-Lebanon.
