Event report: Sustainable Progress League

Diversey, a regional and global leader in hygiene solutions, and HAMA brought together hoteliers from the most prominent properties in the region to discuss sustainability at Dinner By Heston Blumenthal Dubai in Atlantis The Royal

Hoteliers engaged in a discussion centred on sustainability, highlighting efforts and initiatives in the UAE, as well as exploring smart technologies and innovative processes that could simultaneously reduce costs and benefit the environment.

The conversation began with a reflection on the understanding of sustainability, acknowledging its ubiquitous presence in discussions over the past decade. Concerns were raised regarding the varying interpretations of sustainability, with the potential for this diversity to impede meaningful progress if not properly addressed.

The discussion underscored the importance of clear communication to ensure that sustainability efforts are aligned with tangible actions rather than mere rhetoric.

Efforts towards sustainability in the UAE were showcased, particularly in the context of eliminating single-use plastics and managing waste generation. Despite the common notion that sustainability incurs costs, speakers presented innovative solutions that challenge this perception.

Examples included investments in technology to fill water bottles on-site, partnerships for glass bottle manufacturing, and revolutionary water activation processes. These initiatives not only contribute to environmental preservation but also enhance the consumer experience, suggesting a shift towards sustainable practices that are economically viable and consumer-oriented.

Within the operational scope of hoteliers, projects were discussed that align with the fundamental principles of sustainable development. One such project involved providing access to clean drinking water through the installation of stations in communities lacking such amenities. This initiative exemplifies the integration of sustainability principles encompassing “People, Planet, and Prosperity” into operational strategies, reflecting a commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

The dialogue highlighted the importance of sustainability as a guiding principle in the hospitality industry, emphasising the need for innovative approaches that balance economic viability with environmental conservation. The exchange of ideas and experiences among hoteliers demonstrated a collective effort to address sustainability challenges and leverage opportunities for positive change.

By fostering collaboration and sharing inspirational initiatives, the hospitality sector in the UAE can continue to lead by example in advancing sustainable practices that benefit both the industry and the wider community.
