There is growth for four-star hotels in the region, but Marloes Knippenberg, Kerten Hospitality’s CEO says that sometimes owners tend to want more when it comes to fit-outs.

Knippenberg, who was ranked 26 on Hotelier Middle East’s Power 50 2019 list explained: “There are owners who want to sign a four-star property, because their friends would have told them that they could lose money with a five-star one. But when it comes to the design phase they still want things that are at a five-star level even if they’re told no. People just don’t get the sense of what that means, that needs to change.”

However, she does believe that things are looking up in the region. “A majority of the people here are under 30 years of age, the moment we start engaging with them and the moment they start taking over family businesses things will change for good.”
