Hospitality Schools: Dubai College of Tourism
Essa Bin Hadher, general manager of the Dubai College of Tourism reveals the latest courses, the college’s philosophy and student mix
Please provide an outline of the courses you offer?
Dubai College of Tourism (DCT) provides certificate, diploma and applied bachelor level programmes in five faculties: Tourism, Hospitality, Retail, Events and Culinary Arts. A certificate-level course is full-time study from September 2019 until June 2020. On successfully passing certificate level, students can then proceed to diploma and onto applied bachelor levels. Our entire structure complies with the National Qualifications Framework and courses are accredited by KHDA. That means that our certificates are Certificate level 4 qualifications. A certificate level 4 requires 1,020 hours of study. Meaning study is full-time, five days a week over three trimesters. It would be impossible to secure a certificate level 4 any faster than that, and it is very important that students verify the level of qualification provided. Far too many vendors don’t provide a clear distinction on the level of certificate they are teaching. A diploma requires a further 330 hours of study or more complex units and an Applied Bachelor requires a total of 2,610 hours of study.
Have you recently introduced any new courses?
We recently introduced two new part-time courses, which are the following: Food and Beverage Service Professional; and Business Studies. Both courses are available on one weekend day and two evenings a week. The Business Studies course is a Certificate Level 2 qualification totalling 360 hours of study.
What other services does the college offer?
Dubai College of Tourism also operate the Dubai Way platform, which provides courses for the entire ‘tourist-facing-workforce’. The programmes such as Dubai Way, Inclusive Service and Chinese Traveller Standards are critical to the visitor experience and to repeat visitation. Ensuring that Dubai’s ‘tourist-facing-workforce’ are as knowledgeable about our city and as resourceful as possible is essential if we are to meet our goals.
The Dubai Way programme consists of 30 video lessons, activities and online assessments, all designed to improve the knowledge of the ‘tourist-facing-workforce’. With improved knowledge our workforce will become more resourceful and therefore provide a much better experience for our millions of visitors.
It is also critical that our workforce understands how to be fully inclusive and welcome all visitors to Dubai. Our ‘Inclusive Service’ training programme provides the knowledge to assist our workforce to welcome ‘People of Determination’ to Dubai and ensure that everyone receives the same level of service irrelevant of their disability.
Tell us about your student mix.
Our students are predominantly from Dubai and the Northern Emirates and are a broad reflection of the nationalities represented within the UAE. Our core focus is on recruiting students who grew up in Dubai and who call this wonderful city home. With more than 500,000 school age children studying in Dubai we have a large future workforce and we would like to see them study through DCT and back out into our workforce.
