Hotelier Awards 2018 shortlist: Hotel Engineer of the Year

Here are the eight finalists for the Hotel Engineer of the Year category in 2018

Mohiy Sowilam, cluster director of engineering, Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson hotels Yas Island Abu Dhabi: 

Thanks to the work of Mohiy Sowilam, his Radisson Blu is the first hotel in the GCC to have its water 100% heated by solar energy, slashing hot water supply costs by 85%, saving AED 220,000 in the year to date. In addition, Sowilam installed LED bulbs and control timers for all of the lights in the establishment as well as completed heat pump investments in order to save energy. The total energy savings for the last 12 months amount to 35%, making the Radisson Blu on Yas Island the top energy saving property amongst all Radisson hotels in the MENA region. To cap it all, when one of his employees was being married, and knowing she did not have much of a budget, Sowilam called on his contacts to get her free stage lights, high tech music equipment and a stage, and had a team of engineering staff on hand to make her wedding a special occasion.

Butch Lim, director of engineering, Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre: 

Butch Lim has been a key part of the Le Meridien team for over 30 years, and has been a driving force behind the hotel’s sustainability processes. He helped save the hotel over AED 1m thanks to his efforts to recycle garden water to portable water used in the chiller district cooling system. He planned and installed a solar water heating system in the great ballroom and main kitchen which saved over 200,000kw of energy per year, while Lim and his team also created a fully equipped gym including two temperature-controlled swimming pools, Jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room.

Raja Selvaraj has assisted his chief engineer on a host of major projects over the summer months including a number that are still ongoing. He has taking charge of LED re-lamping of 194 rooms for energy saving purposes and painted 165 apartment rooms. The replacement of damaged wood panelling outside the bathtub areas of 73 rooms and the replacement of all three lobby revolving doors are just some examples of his stellar work. He has also helped save his hotel almost AED 500,000 thanks to his idea to install individual water meters and electrical meters to track consumption.

Victor Peter, director of engineering, Fairmont Ajman: 

By replacing 2,600 lightbulbs with LEDs, Victor Peter has saved Fairmont Ajman an estimated AED 320,400 per year. He has replaced the entire kids’ swimming pool flooring with anti-slip tiles that have also helped to prevent damage to the pool. Peter also helped improve the hotel’s wedding business by constructing a bar area with washrooms and adding additional power supplies to the main ballroom which has seen an increase in bookings.
Victor Peter, director of engineering, Fairmont Ajman: By replacing 2,600 lightbulbs with LEDs, Victor Peter has saved Fairmont Ajman an estimated AED 320,400 per year. Samer Ibdah, director of engineering, InterContinental Hotel Jeddah: 

Samer Ibdah’s work has helped to achieve savings of 15% on last year’s budget, amounting to SR 190,000. Ibdah also launched a new irrigation system that consumes less water than the hotel’s previous one and reduced its water bill by 5%. He has also done a lot of work for the less fortunate in the community, supporting the local food bank and organising blood donation and cloth collection. Ibdah has also organised free iftar parties at the hotel for disabled children and orphans and assisted in beach cleaning.

He takes time out of his busy schedule and passionately coaches his team on a one-on-one basis. He has pushed the team to identify their capability and grow to the next level. Neerja, a young engineer who joined the team as coordinator, has been trained under his wings to the next level as Supervisor. Sunil and Jerry, who were office administrators, have been trained as Technical Supervisors.

Sikander Peter was the key man behind the planning, supervision, and contractor co-ordination of the O’Learys Sports Restaurant construction job valued at AED 1m. He also lead the renovation project of the TIME Topaz Hotel Apartments, handling the full renovation of all 64 apartments from flooring to furniture arrangement. Peter even helped save one of his colleague’s lives by rushing him to hospital at 2am when he suffered from kidney pains.

As a mentor to an up-and-coming female engineer, he took her under his wing and aided her training as part of his keen desire to boost female employment rates. A talented engineer and designer, Khleifat’s knowledge has allowed the creation of some of the hotel’s most avant-garde endeavours including expansive renovations for the hotel lobby, the building of a winter garden, and the establishment of a new restaurant in the lobby. He has also helped reduce the establishment’s energy consumption by 30% since 2015.
