Purchasing Power: Southern Sun Abu Dhabi's Bernard Mtengwa
Southern Sun Abu Dhabi finance controller Bernard Mtengwa talks about hospitality purchasing, having spent 10 years in the industry
How long have you been in the hotel purchasing industry?
I have been in hotel purchasing for more than 10 years, with experience in Africa and Middle East.
What products are you on the lookout for in the market?
Innovative products that provide long term sustainable savings to the hotel with minimal impact on the environment. Of note are organic range products, recycled products, and cost effective, technologically savvy new equipment.
What is the biggest challenge in purchasing today?
There is a need to delicately balance price and quality as the market has been flooded with cheap products. The hotel supply value chain has been inundated with a plethora of counterfeit products and one needs to be discerning when entering into contracts so as avoid compromising service delivery.
Tell us about one of your most successful deals?
I have had the opportunity to work on numerous cost management initiatives during the year as we streamlined our processes to make the business more efficient in order to adapt to market conditions.
What does a supplier have to do to impress you?
Integrity and reliability are key components of our business ethos in Tsogosun, and in my capacity as the finance and procurement head, we look to do business in an ethical and transparent manner.
