Fabien Fresnel, dean, Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne

EHL has a new Master’s program – could you tell us more?

The Master of Science HES-SO in global hospitality business is reserved for a selected group of Bachelor’s graduates from top hospitality institutions around the world. We joined forces with the Conrad N. Hilton College at the University of Houston, and the School of Hotel & Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The intense 18-month curriculum focuses on areas of strong industry demand, such as revenue management, hospitality marketing and innovation, with a specific adaptation to regional market dynamics. The emphasis is on building a business understanding of customers from all continents, and on developing skills necessary to lead multi-cultural, multi-language teams. Over the three-semester course, students will live, work and study in Lausanne (Switzerland), Hong Kong (China), and Houston (USA). The program also includes business field trips to hospitality hubs such as Paris, Barcelona, New York, Shanghai and Beijing amongst others.

Why is a Swiss education still worth it, with the strong Swiss currency ?

Looking at the long term return on investment, your education is an investment in your future, and for this, your best bet is choosing one of the world’s best hospitality management schools. Furthermore, diploma or educational qualification on your resume is key for your first job and again 10-15 years later when you apply to senior positions. A Swiss education also offers graduates of certain nationalities to continue working in Switzerland after completing their degree.

What is unique about the Swiss educational system?
A strong balance between practice and theory has become a point of reference for other institutions to follow, and Switzerland is arguably the birthplace of hospitality. With a great, safe environment, Switzerland is renowned for its quality of life. The EHL campus boasts unique teaching and living facilities, including a gastronomic restaurant rated in the best restaurant guides. Students at EHL comprise over 90 nationalities, with a strong Swiss core (40% of students are Swiss, and teaching staff are both international and Swiss).

What is unique about an education at EHL?
EHL is ranked the world’s number one school for hospitality management education (TNS Sofres, 2013). Over the last 120 years, we have developed an inspirational and innovative university-level teaching approach that produces top-notch managers for the international hospitality industry. The four pillars of our education program are: understanding how the industry works from the ground up, acquiring management skills, developing interpersonal skills and gaining hands-on experience.

We take pride in our quality of teaching, award-winning faculty both in Academic and practical Arts, and the Lausanne Hospitality research center. The mission of the Lausanne Hospitality research center is to make a contribution to the hospitality industry and hospitality education through original projects conducted by our fellows and students.
