Makkah hotel job fair draws big crowds
More than five applicants per role at recent job fair for hotels in Holy City
With a number of hotel openings on the horizon in Makkah, a recent job fair in the Holy City reportedly saw more than 2500 people apply for just 500 jobs in upcoming properties.
The hotels are part of the Jabal Omar project, which is located in close proximity to the Grand Mosque, and therefore a key part of efforts to cater to the growing number of religious tourists to the city.
According to The Saudi Gazette, the job fair lasted three days and was hosted by Makkah Chamber of Commerce.
“Twenty-six hotel companies offered jobs at 38 hotels in the luxurious Jabal Omar hotels resort near the Grand Mosque,” said Makkah Chamber of Commerce general supervisor of career fairs Hasan Kansarah.
“The fair went on for three days and we had 840 applicants on the first day alone.”
Salaries for the roles start from SR4,000 ($1066), along with housing, health insurance for the employee and their family, training workshops, and bonuses.
The hotels were reportedly looking for applicants for roles in finance, restaurants, internal services, maintenance, catering, reception, human resources, safety and security, and administration.
It was recently revealed that the Saudi government is looking into raising the minimum wage for Saudi nationals from SAR3000 (US $800) to SAR5300 ($1412), in order to make the private sector more appealing to Saudis and boost the process of job nationalisation.
