The first team award of the Caterer Middle East Awards, which took place at Ritz-Carlton DIFC on Wednesday June 11, was given to The Dek 8, Media One Hotel, Dubai.

The award set out to recognise the achievements of all the people that make a bar an operational success.

Judges were impressed by the winners’ close team work that resulted in increased covers, reduced costs and revamped food menus to attract a wider clientele.

Bar manager Stephen Mannin, on behalf of the team at The Dek on 8, said that the bar has extended its mid-week popularity to weekends by “choosing the right people in Dubai that can help”.

Mannin emphasised the importance of empowering his team members, rewarding them for their hard work, and giving them variety in their roles to keep them motivated

The UK national commented: “We try different ideas but again every time I have a team briefing I ask them what we are doing wrong and what are we doing right.

“Because they are face to face so if it’s not for the guys giving their feedback too then we can’t fix things – not that anything is broken but not everything can work perfectly all of the time.”

Highly commended for the award was Nasimi Beach, Atlantis the Palm, Dubai, which impressed judges with the endurance of team members who on average travel 8kn per day to serve guests, and who have increased guest satisfaction scores month on month.

Shortlisted nominees included No.5 Lounge & Bar, The Ritz-Carlton DIFC, Paco’s Bar, Hilton Al Ain and Upon the 31st, Hilton Beirut Habtoor Grand, Beirut.

The Caterer Middle East Bar Team of the Year Award was sponsored by Diamond.
