International lighting specialist Philips and carpet manufacturer Desso have teamed up to create a range of new light emitting carpets designed to enhance information, direction and safety in hotels and public buildings.

LED lighting has been integrated into light transmissive carpet to help guide people around buildings, including towards safety exits. The lighting de-clutters spaces by making important information visible only when needed, and also enhances ambience and atmosphere.

Philips Lighting marketing and sales director Ed Huibers said: “This light transmissive carpet solution is designed to engage directly with people’s senses and the eyes’ natural inclination to seek out light.

The design of the technology has taken into account people’s tendency to look to the floor for guidance when moving through a space. The carpet lighting offers information and direction as well as safety benefits. This partnership of market leaders is focused on bringing meaningful innovations to the market”.

Philips and Desso have also agreed to work exclusively together to further develop potential markets in EMEA, as well as integrate the solution — which will be officially launched in 2014 — into new and existing buildings.

Desso CEO Alexander Collot d’Escury commented: “We know people spend 90% of their time indoors and our vision is to create innovative flooring solutions that contribute to people’s health and wellbeing. This new solution developed with our partner Philips meets this need and offers exciting ways to enhance the interaction between the interior space and its users”.

The lighting solution, currently being trialled in carefully selected pilot projects, has been designed for high traffic areas and will be available in a range of different colours, shapes and sizes.
