James Martin: bringing pie and peas to Dubai this year? James Martin: bringing pie and peas to Dubai this year?

Celebrity TV chef James Martin has revealed that he may open a signature restaurant in Dubai as early as the end of this year.

Speaking exclusively to Caterer Middle East at last week’s Taste of Dubai show, Martin revealed that he had already “had offers for a couple of restaurants”, but said he was waiting until he was certain he could spend enough time on the project.

“To me, if you do something you’ve got to be there and I’m really busy back home in the UK at the moment,” he explained.

“It’s so easy just to give your name to something and say ‘right, here’s another one and another one,’ and that’s just not me.

“But hopefully, at end of this year or the beginning of next, it might happen,” Martin continued. “I’d do proper British grub: afternoon tea, pie and peas, fish and chips, that kind of stuff.”

Martin, who was taking part in Taste of Dubai for the first time, demonstrated his skills in the show’s Mark Wilkinson Chefs Theatre along with Gary Rhodes and Georgio Locatelli, as well as taking part in the inaugural Spinney’s Cookery School, giving visitors the opportunity to practise their own culinary skills.

The four-day event showcased 22 Dubai restaurants, which served their signature dishes to a crowd of visitors.

Event director Victoria Crick commented: "We’ve been overwhelmed with compliments about Taste of Dubai this year from the chefs, the restaurants, the exhibitors and most importantly our visitors. Everyone has had a great time and we’re determined to create an even better event in 2010.”
