Dubai Green Tourism Programme (DGTP) to be launched in recognition of growing need for sustainable tourism initiatives.

The Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) is to enable the hospitality industry in Dubai to become more sustainable and efficient in managing their resources with the launch of Dubai Green Tourism Programme (DGTP).

Speaking exclusively with Hotelier Middle East, DTCM senior manager of tourism development and investments Solaiman Al Rifai said the programme is scheduled to launch in late April in-line with Arabian Travel Market 2016.

“We don’t want to put additional burdens on the hoteliers with our sustainability initiatives – we will first show them how to pick the low hanging fruits and then encourage them to pursue further sustainability involvement moving forward," said Al Rafai.

Al Rifai added that DGTP would detail ‘no cost’ and ‘low cost’ options for hoteliers seeking to apply sustainability solutions for ‘quick wins’.

“Our main focus is one- two- and three-star properties, we aim to encourage and facilitate sponsorship opportunities to allow smaller independent hotels to participate in our sustainability initiatives," Al Rifai on the budget and mid-market hospitality sector in Dubai.

DGTP is to act as a link connecting all hoteliers in the emirate – providing learning opportunities and facilitating the implementation of initiatives.

DTCM will act as an advisory board for hotels, offering further advice regarding financial support for those wishing to pursue substantial activities such as retrofit initiatives.
